The Nerve First Approach

A few years ago, Dr. Gentempo, Dr. Kent and I were recording a segment for the On Purpose. It’s a semi regular feature known as “Insight on the Insight”. My usual comment was that it’s a constant struggle for chiropractors to be committed to “connecting the hip bone to the Universe”.

There is always this push to talk about the spine and then draw attention to the nervous system and health. It dawned on me that we need to be singularly focused on the “Nerve First Approach” as every aspect of our lives; every thought, feeling, action, movement or emotion, is initiated and mediated through the nervous system. I coined the term, Nerve First Approach” and since then we have been teaching and training this principle.

Well, fast forward to today and in May, 09, I am on the cover of The American Chiropractor with an interview on, you guessed it, “The Nerve First Approach”. Click on the link and read the interview! It seems that the message of whole health and wellness doesn’t always have to be about the spine first.

It’s our opportunity and responsibility to alert our patients and practice members that our body is always listening to the environment around itself and making instantaneous, beneficial decisions…always! The challenges arise when as DD, as far back as the beginning of the 20th Century, stated, that “toxins, traumas and auto-suggestion”, disturbed the natural communication and a state of Dis-Ease began leading to DISEASE.

Move the language forward to 2009 and we now understand that the degree of neural efficiency is proportional to the functional health and wellness of the individual. Lifestyle stresses are stored within the spinal core and the neural processor is disturbed and eventually distorted. If we can’t process stress it gets stored.

I remind my patients that the neural scans we perform tell us where the body is storing stress in the spinal core but more importantly, how deeply those stresses are affecting their health.

Imagine the power that you can have in changing lives when you share the “Nerve First Approach”. Imagine how much fun you can have in practice by focusing on neural efficiency rather than strains and sprains.
